The Mustangs (6-8) prevailed 3-0 over the Forest City Owls (6-8) in the opening end of a doubleheader after a three-run 4th propelled them to a lead that they would not relinquish.
Both the Owls' Patrick Szczypinski and the Mustangs' Davis Palermo began the ballgame in dominating fashion, with the only hit in the first three innings coming on a leadoff single by Kirby Lambert to begin the second.
The Mustangs were able to plate all of their runs in the fourth inning after a Josh Smith double with one out. The following pitch, Tyler Riebock sent a line drive over the right field wall to give Martinsville a 2-0 lead. Martinsville later capitalized on a Paul Salata error in the inning to eventually plate Trey Woosley who stretched the Mustangs advantage to three.
Palermo went the full seven for the home side, pitching the full seven, surrendering just one hit while striking out nine Owls. It was his second win of the 2019 campaign, and his performance now puts him as the Coastal Plain League leader in ERA with an astounding 1.04 mark through 17.1 innings.
Szczypinski picked up the loss despite throwing all six for the visiting side, allowing two earned runs and striking out four. It resulted in his first loss of the season, after having won two of his first three starts in 2019.
The teams will square off for the second leg of a doubleheader just after the conclusion of Game 1.
