The Fayetteville SwampDogs were defeated 9-6 Wednesday night at the hands of the Holly Springs Salamanders.
The 'Dogs found most of their offense in the third inning. When Holly Springs loaded the bases for Sean McGeehan, he was subsequently hit by a pitch to score one. Then, a bases-clearing triple by Austin Bost brought home three more. The inning was capped by a Brandon Talley RBI groundout to give the SwampDogs a 5-4 lead.
Holly Springs responded with four in the bottom half and didn't take their foot off the gas, scoring one more in the ninth for good measure to claim the victory.
Bost went 2-4 on the night with three runs driven in. Nick Barnes also had two hits in the game.
Seth Beard made his SwampDogs debut, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out two.
Talley has become a two-way option for head coach David Anderson, who pulled the UL-Lafayette infielder from first base in the eighth and put him on the mound. Talley went on to throw a one-two-three inning.
The SwampDogs return home on Thursday to play Holly Springs for the third time in six days, where the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative puzzle. It's also Dog Day Thursday, so don't forget to bring your furry friend to the ballpark! Gates open at 6 PM and first pitch is at 7:05.
