The Forest City Owls walked off their second consecutive game on Friday night, defeating the Asheboro Copperheads 3-2. Matthew Lumsden collected the winning hit for Forest City, scoring Todd Elwood on an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Owls struck first in the game, when Kendall McGowan scored Garrett Blaylock on an RBI single in the bottom of the first. The play gave Forest City a 1-0 lead. The lead stayed intact until the fifth inning, when Aseboro scored a pair of runs, with both Parker Orr and Trey Polewski crossing the plate. It was 2-1, Copperheads out in front, through five innings.
The two runs for the Copperheads were the only blemish on Patrick Szczypinski's night. The right hander allowed two earned runs in six innings of work. He struck out six, and walked three in his outing. He was relieved by Connor Ollio, who made his Owls 2019 debut. The right hander picked up the win in relief. He lasted three innings, and didn't allow a run on two hits. He collected four strikeouts in the outing.
The Owls tied the game in the eight inning, and won the game in the ninth. Kendall McGowan tied the game with a one-out solo home run in the eighth inning, his fourth homer of the season. McGowan finished the night three for four with two RBIs. The Owls then won it with Matt Lumsden's one-out single in the ninth.
Joe Smeton was the losing pitcher for Asheboro, after surrendering the walk off hit. Asheboro's Tyler Koch received a no-decision on the night, allowing one run through seven strong. He had 12 strikeouts and three walks.
Forest City improved to 5-5 with the win, while Asheboro fell to 6-3 with the loss. The Owls are now only 1.5 games back in the West Division. They'll travel to Gastonia tomorrow for a rain-made doubleheader with the Grizzlies. First pitch for game one is set for 6:00.
