Despite taking a 4-2 lead into the ninth, the Martinsville Mustangs fell 9-8 in 11 innings to the Peninsula Pilots at Hooker Field on Thursday night.
Making his second start of the summer, Butler allowed just the two runs on three hits and struck out three in four innings of work.
Martinsville responded immediately in the home half of the fourth, as an RBI groundout by first baseman Ethan Whitely (UT-Martin) and an RBI single off the bat of catcher Hank Moore (Lincoln Memorial) evened things up 2-2.
The Mustangs pulled ahead for the first time in the fifth when second baseman Casey Harford (UT-Martin) roped an RBI single to left and third baseman Tyler Riebock(Ouachita Baptist) sent a sac-fly to center to make it 4-2.
After Calvin Marley (Wichita State) walked two batters and exited with one out in the top of the ninth, closer Ryan Evans (Grambling State) entered the game looking for his second save of the season. A throwing error by Mustangs shortstop Colin Allman(Newberry) however, allowed the Pilots to tie the game up 4-4 before Evans issued a bases loaded walk to give Peninsula a 5-4 ninth inning advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Mustangs rallied for one run on a two out, pinch-hit RBI double by Kenny Bergmann (Newberry) to it up 5-5 and send the game to extras.
After both teams escaped big tenth inning jams, the Pilots exploded for four runs in the top of the 11th off reliever Dylan Tuttle (Guilford). The right-hander was one of seven pitchers used by the Mustangs.
An Allman sac-fly and a Josh Smith (Georgia State) two-run single trimmed the deficit to 9-8 in the bottom of the 11th, but the Mustangs rally fell short.
With their losing streak snapped at three games, the Mustangs head to Fayetteville on Friday night to face the SwampDogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
