The Forest City Owls (2-4) defeated the Gastonia Grizzlies (4-2) on Thursday night at McNair Field, by a score of 9-4.
Patrick Szczypinski collected his second win in as many starts, going seven innings for the Owls. Szczypinski allowed eight hits and four runs, three of which were earned, putting together the longest outing by a Forest City starting pitcher through six games. The right hander walked three on the night, striking out six. He was relieved by Caleb Murphy and Issac Bracken, who collectively pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Owls in the win.
The Owls scored all nine of their runs in the sixth inning. They forced the Grizzlies to use four pitchers during an inning that saw thirteen Owls hitters come to the plate. Highlights in the innings included a two-RBI double from Garrett Blaylock, along with a grand slam from Matthew Lumsden. Both hits occurred with two outs.
Jarrett Kryzanowski lasted 5.1 innings for Gastonia, allowing one earned run on four hits in a no-decision performance. The loss goes to Nolan Wilson, who allowed four runs on two hits, with two hit batters, while he recorded only one out.
With the win, the Owls improve their record to 2-4 on the young season. The Grizzlies fell to 4-2 with the loss. Forest City had nine runs on nine hits. They committed three defensive errors, while leaving ten on base. Gastonia scored four runs on nine hits. They had one defensive error, and also left ten stranded. The time of the game was 3 hours, 10 minutes.
The Owls will take on the Grizzlies again on Friday, playing the second half of a home and home between the clubs.
