Matt Harrison's 1st Inning Grand Slam Can't Hold Off Grizzlies Saturday Night, 6-4

GASTONIA, N.C. – The Gastonia Grizzlies (3-0) surrendered a grand slam to the Owls' (1-2) Matt Harrison in the first inning, but found a way to stay undefeated in the 2019 season as they defeated Forest City x-x Saturday night at Sims Legion Park in Gastonia.


The Owls got started quickly in the first, as Todd Elwood led off the ballgame with a single, followed by another base knock by Jake Lyle. After a Drew Donathan walk, it was Matt Harrison who hit his first homerun of the 2019 campaign to give Forest City the early 4-0 lead.


Gastonia responded in the second, after a walk led to an error that allowed the Grizzlies' Mac Starbuck to score.  Jeff Cyr later singled in the inning, scoring two, making it a one-run contest.


Cyr also plated the next two for the tuxedo-dressed bunch, as his two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth gave Gastonia it's first lead of the night, 5-4.  The Grizzlies added another run in the fifth off an Orzel single.


The game went scoreless following the fifth inning, thanks in part to a solid effort in relief by Zachary Taglieri for the Owls, who through two innings surrendered one hit and struck out five  Rohan Handa and Dylan Smith also combined for solid work as well after taking over for starter Mitchell HolcombJarret Krzyzanowski entered the ballgame, striking out Garrett Blaylock for the save.


Gastonia will take in two days off in the schedule before traveling to Savannah, GA to meetup with the Bananas.  Both Owls road opponents have left to take on the Georgia-based team in their next game.


Forest City returns to action Monday night at McNair Field for their first matchup of the season with the Macon Bacon.  First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.  The game can be found on CPL's stretch internet service, with Mitch Montani on the call.
