The Blowfish jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to an error in the first off the bat of South Carolina first-baseman Jordan Holladay. Brett Fulk got the start to open the 2019 season after leading the Blowfish in wins in 2018.
The Owls would tack on six runs behind the power of Garrett Blaylock and Kirby Lambert. Blaylock hit a two run home run in the trees in right field, while Lambert blasted one on the very next pitch to chase Brett Fulk out of the game. The Blowfish bullpen would be called on several innings ahead of plan. Ryan Flores would be the first stop gap trying to end the fourth inning. After Fulk surrendered five runs, the Owls would run it to six runs before Flores recorded the final out of the inning.
From the fifth through the eighth inning, the Blowfish bullpen held strong to hold the Owls off the scoreboard. Flores, Sheldon Reed (Clemson), Peyton Evans (Lander), and Will Abbott (The Citadel) stifled the Forest City offense. That allowed the Blowfish to begin chipping away at the lead, scoring runs in the fifth and seventh.
The bottom of the ninth saw the Blowfish down 10-4 and in need of a serious rally. An infield single by Jimmy Marcelli got the rally started, followed by a single from Houston Wright, and Jordan Holladay as well. With the bases loaded, Josiah Sightler worked a walk to score the first run of the ninth. A two RBI double from Zacchaeus Rasberry brought the deficit to three. An RBI groundout from Tyler Corbitt continued to cut the deficit. With the score now 10-9 and two outs on the board, Josh Gregory laced a ball to dead center that seemed ticketed to send us to extra innings. Instead, the ball hopped off the wall and the center fielder Elwood made a great throw to tag Gregory out at third to end the game.
The Blowfish fall 10-9 in game one of the Blowfish 2019 season. Lexington County travels to take on the Savannah Bananas (1-0) tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. It's the first South Division matchup of the season and first against the Bananas
