Former Morehead City Marlin, Cal Quantrill, made his Major League debut May 1 for the San Diego Padres. Quantrill got the start, going five and 2/3 innings while allowing two runs and striking out two in the Padres 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
Quantrill was a highly touted prospect coming out of Stanford University, ultimately being selected 8th overall in the first round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Padres. Coming into the season as the Padres 12th overall prospect, the right-hander holds a career 4.47 ERA with 303 strikeouts across 326 innings pitched at the minor league level. He spent much of last season at the AAA level before starting 2019 there as well before his recent call-up to MLB and ultimately his debut last night.
After finishing off a stellar freshman season at Stanford in 2014 where he was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Quantrill joined the Marlins for his first season of summer baseball. In total he posted a 3-0 record and a 1.51 ERA with 33 strikeouts over 22 2/3 innings pitched while also being named to the starter for the CPL Select Team that took on the USA Collegiate National Team as well as earning the start for the CPL East All-Stars. Quantrill marks the fourth former CPL player to make their major league debut in 2019, and the 121st all-time. His debut also pushes Morehead City's (who shares the history of previous CPL franchise New Bern) major league alumni total to seven all-time.
