WILSON, N.C. – Second Baseman Kevin McGowan tallied three hits and was responsible for three runs batted in for the Wilson Tobs on Friday night at Historic Fleming Stadium. The Tobs saw the Peninsula Pilots plate four runs in the top of the fourth inning en route to a 7-6 victory.
The Tobs hosted their 5th Annual Diggin in the Diamond Game courtesy of Saslow's Jewelers in Wilson. Fans were able to take home several prizes including a three-day-two-night trip to Las Vegas, four-day cruise, his & her wedding bands, fifty-dollar Saslow's gift card, and much more.
McGowan finished the night 3-for-4 at the plate for the Tobs with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Faso and Carson Freeman recorded a pair of hits in the contest.
Peninsula opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning against Wilson starter David Harrison. A leadoff walk would come back to hurt Harrison as a sacrifice fly to right field made it 1-0 Pilots. McGowan answered with a double to left field for the Tobs in the bottom of the frame to put the Tobs on top 2-1.
A triple from the Pilots in the top of the third inning knotted the score 2-2 but would be answered again by another rally from the Tobs as Faso singled to plate Jacob Nester and make it 3-2. Duffy followed with a double to right center as the Tobs upped their lead to 4-2.
The big inning for the Pilots would come in the top of the fourth inning as some defensive miscues would come back to haunt the Tobs. With two outs in the frame, a two-RBI single from Cole Girouard evened the score 4-4. Peninsula then captured its second lead of the night off an error that allowed a pair of runs to score and make it 6-4.
McGowan delivered his third RBI of the contest for Wilson in the bottom of the fourth inning as he laced a single to center field to score Brenton Doyle and trim the deficit to 6-5. Peninsula added what would prove to be the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning. A one-out walk would come around to score off a two-out single from Girouard, who notched his third RBI of the contest to make it 7-5.
Charron cut the deficit to one run with a solo home run off the scoreboard in left field. The Tobs placed a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning following an error by the Pilots and a single from McGowan. Peninsula reliever Ryan Devine would get a strikeout and a force-out to end the contest and preserve the 7-6 victory for the Pilots.
Harrison (0-2) suffered his second loss of the season despite surrendering just two earned runs off five hits. All four of Peninsula's runs in the fourth inning against Harrison were unearned. Cody Smith tossed a pair of scoreless innings for Wilson while fanning two batters. Luis Acosta tallied a scoreless top of the ninth inning, recording his 18th strikeout of the season in the process.
