Fayetteville, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (6-1) secured the squads fourth road win of the summer with a 10-1 triumph over the Fayetteville SwampDogs (2-4) at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
Returning Marlin starter Octavio Mirabal (King University) shinned on the mound in six innings of work, only allowing three hits and one run. The senior struck out 7-of-22 Fayetteville hitters he faced.
The top of the second started with Marlins outfielder Joe Mason (Pitt CC) being hit by a pitch. Dominick Cammarata (UNC Charlotte) then notched his third hit in his third game, advancing Mason to third. Shortstop Alex Pimentel's (Southwestern Oklahoma) ground out to the right side of the infield brought Mason home to tie the game at one. Bryce Delevie (Columbus State) tacked on his first RBI as he singled up the middle, scoring Cammarata, and giving Morehead City the lead at the end of the second.
Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) notched a two-out single through the right side. Marlins left field then launched a double to right center field, allowing Dougherty to score from first, giving the Marlins a 3-1 lead.
The Marlins offense exploded in the top of the fifth with five hits and a thre runs. Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) singled up the middle to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a ground out. Mason then smacked his second double of the night to right center field for hit number 10 and fourth RBI of the summer. Cammarata tapped a single to right field and brought home Mason. With two outs in the frame, Ari Sechopoulos (College of Charleston) yanked a pitch to right field, scoring another run and stretching the Marlins lead to 6-1.
Luke Shadid (Bradley University) started the sixth inning with a single and swiped a bag to move over to second. Johnson roped a double down the left field line and scored Shadid. Doughert then skied a pop up to center field that was deep enough for Johnson to tag and score from third, giving the Marlins a 8-1 lead.
Thomas Greene (Longwood) came on in the seventh inning and pitched through inning, not allowing a SwampDog baserunner.
In the next inning, Pimentel singled and stole second to lead off the seventh. Delevie then reached on an error from the SwampDogs third baseman. Danton Hyman (Newberry) then laced a two-RBI single up the middle, tacking on two more Morehead City runs, and making it a 10-1 lead.
A first inning home run from Fayetteville's Joey Wiemer gave the home team an early one-run lead, but the SwampDog offense would quited over the next seven innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the ninth inning when the home team added just one more run on, making it a final score of 10-2 in Morehead City's favor
