EDENTON, N.C. – Brenton Doyle's two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning wouldn't be enough offense for the Wilson Tobs on Monday night as the Edenton Steamers recorded a 5-2 win in a Coastal Plain League matchup at Historic Hicks Field.
Doyle finished the contest 1-for-3 at the plate with one run scored to go along with his two runs batted in. First baseman Ben Faso and second baseman Kevin McGowan each tallied a hit for the Tobs as McGowan delivered a double in the top of the eighth inning.
Trailing 3-0 entering the top of the fourth inning, Faso notched the first hit of the night for the Tobs with a single up the middle. Doyle would follow with an opposite-field home run off the scoreboard in right field.
Edenton plated a run in each of the first three innings of play as the Steamers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first off, an error by the Tobs in right field. The Steamers added to their lead in the second as a throwing error by the Tobs with a runner attempting to steal third base allowed the run to score.
A wild pitch upped the Edenton lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. The Steamers rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning as Nick Caruso made it 5-2 with a single down the right-field line.
Steamers starter Jake Miller (1-0) surrendered just two hits through six innings while fanning 10 batters and walking none. Reliever RD Lutze yielded just one hit in his two innings of work and added five strikeouts for Edenton. Ryan Scharf tallied his first save of the season by tossing a clean ninth inning.
Wilson Starter Jason Cornatzer (0-1) was handed with the loss despite allowing only one earned run on the night. Cornatzer allowed three runs off four hits through three innings of work. Carson Freeman allowed a pair of runs in the fourth inning before tossing a pair of clean frames, while Tripper Ergle retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
