The Wilson Tobs started their playoff run with a monumental win over rival Wilmington by a score of 14-1.
The Sharks entered the game as favorites after having taken seven of the last eight from Wilson. However, the Tobs offense lit up seven different pitches for Wilmington.
Mike Castellani (Bucknell) started for Wilmington, but after a bizarre injury, the Sharks turned to East Carolina’s Shelton Perkins in the second inning.
CJ Ballard (Georgia Southern) scored to break a scoreless tie in the second inning, but it was a two-run blast from Jack Larsen (UC-San Diego) in the third inning that really burst the game open.
With the score standing at 3-0, the Sharks turned to Daniel Johnson (Charleston Southern), a recent ace acquisition from the Cape Cod League.
Wilson turned on the jets and blasted Johnson for four runs in the fourth inning, three of which were earned.
Holding a 7-0 lead, Zack Mozingo (East Carolina) threw a brilliant six innings. Mozingo worked for three strikeouts and only allowed six hits.
Ballard would continue his offense brilliance, launching an RBI-triple to highlight his multi-hit performance.
Larsen would also end with an impactful evening, going 3-4 and being a mere triple off of the cycle.
If anyone doubted the offense power of the Tobs, they further eradicated the demons of Ethan Wortkoetter (Presbyterian) in the seventh inning. Wilson blitzed the reliever for five runs in the inning, effectively making the game 14-0.
Madison Stokes (South Carolina) would hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to make it 14-1, which would be the final.
Mozingo earns the win (1-0, 2-1) while Perkins takes the loss (0-1, 2-0).
Wilson will face top-seeded Peninsula at a sold-out War Memorial Stadium on Friday night. The Tobs are one game away from a Petitt Cup Finals berth for the second time in three years.
