The Sharks were on the road for the second night in a row and it was another offense explosion. Wilmington scored 16 for the second consecutive night in the 16-12 win over the Asheboro Copperheads.
The visitors struck first in the contest. Justin Dean doubled on the first pitch of the game and then Luke Morgan poked a single back up the middle to score Dean. The base hit extended the Sharks shortstop’s hitting streak to 17 games. Asheboro responded in the bottom of the first. A single by Kirby Lambert tied the game before a 2-run home run by Vito Friscia put the Copperheads on top.
In the second, the Sharks could do no wrong against the Copperheads start John Alan Kendrick. With one out, Danny Wondrack singled and Brian Parreira walked. Then, Thatcher Coleman single home Wondrack to make it 3-2. Cam Locklear walked to load the bases. Justin Dean singled in to right field to put the Sharks on top 4-3. Michael Sandle walked to reload the bases. Luke Morgan then hit his second RBI single and the bases remained loaded with Trevor McCutchin coming to the plate. The right fielder launched a rocket over the wall in straightaway center field for the Sharks first grand slam of the season. At this point, Wilmington led 9-3.
In the third, Wilmington was retired in short order and the Copperheads pulled a run back on the two out single by Vito Friscia. However, the Sharks jumped all over Asheboro’s Leon Hunter in the top of the 4th.
In the fourth, Michael Sandle and Luke Morgan led the inning off with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly from Trevor McCutchin scored Sandle to make it 11-4. Ward Coleman then doubled to score Morgan from second base. Then a Danny Wondrack single put runners on the corners with 1 out. Brian Parreira stepped up and hit a home run to right field for the second straight night to put the Sharks up 10.
However, Asheboro did not go away easy in the contest. In the bottom of the fourth, the Copperheads did all of their damage with two outs. With runners on the corners, Derek Perry hit a Colby Lee fastball over the left field wall to cut the Sharks lead to 7. Asheboro added one more in the inning on a double by the catcher Vito Friscia, which scored Clark Brinkmann.
In the 5th, the Sharks scored another run on a two out double by Brian Parreira that scored one, and had a second runner, Danny Wondrack gunned down at the plate. In the 6th, Asheboro answered with 3 more runs to cut the Sharks lead to 15-11. The Copperheads used two hits, a hit batter and an error to score three unearned runs against Ryan Hall.
In the 7th, both teams would tack on one more run apiece. Wilmington’s came on Danny Wondrack’s fourth hit of the night. Asheboro scored on a solo home run to left field by Derek Perry, his second of the contest.
The winning pitcher was Colby Lee (2-3) despite allowing 8 runs on 11 hits in 5 innings. The loss went to John Alan Kendrick (1-5) who allowed 9 runs on 8 hits in just 2 innings.
Wilmington tied its season high in runs with 16 and hits with 18. The Sharks have now scored 16 in three games this season, June 11th at Holly Springs and the last two contests at Morehead City and Asheboro. The other time the Sharks had 18 hits was against Holly Springs on June 11th.
