Seventh Heaven for the Tobs

WILSON, N.C.

The Tobs rolled to their seventh straight victory, defeating the Holly Springs Salamanders 13-4 on Tuesday night.

In front of over 1,000 people, the Tobs started off with a 1-0 lead on a Jimmy Latona run scored via a Cameron Balego sac fly. The Mercyhurst combo has now plated each other on nine separate occasions.

However, the Amphibians fought back to score four runs between the third and fourth inning. It was the only time the Salamanders scored in the game.

Cristian Perez (Duke) was the standout offensively for HS, scoring two runs with a homer.

The Tobs lit up the board in the fourth inning with a four-run frame. Matt Eppers (Ball State) clubbed a two-RBI double and then scored. Eppers also sang the National Anthem prior to the game.

The Tobs took a 5-4 lead and never looked back. 12 unanswered runs buried the Salamanders in a sea of gold. Andrew Webster (Barton) and Balego both slugged triples.

Wilson secured an 8-4 lead into the eighth inning, but exploded with a second win in the penultimate frame. Webster socked a three-run blast in the eighth., accounting for the majority of the five runs the Tobs scored in the frame.

Alex Yarem (Campbell) went 6.0 innings and K’d six batters en route to his seventh win. Yarem is now 7-2. Kyle Staats swallows to the loss to fall to 0-2.

A seven-game winning streak has the Tobs sitting at 29-22 and in third place in the East. The Tobs magic number shrinks to one after Edenton’s loss to Savannah.

With either a Tobs win or a Steamers loss in the last five days of the season, the Tobs will make the playoffs.

The Tobs can clinch a spot as soon as Thursday if they can win at home vs. Martinsville.
