Updated April 11 2017
Moving into the second week of April, the NCAA Tournament (Congratulations Lady Gamecocks!) and The Masters (Finally, Sergio!) have concluded. With the first pitch of the 2017 Coastal Plain League season just 50 days from being thrown, the anticipation escalates dramatically.
It has been officially announced that the Florence RedWolves and head coach Travis Graves have signed two players from Mississippi schools, Alex Nelms from the University of Southern Mississippi and Clay Casey out of Delta State University.
Alex Nelms will be joining the RedWolves this upcoming summer as a highly-touted right-handed pitcher. A freshman with the Golden Eagles, Nelms has worked his way into a reliever’s role. The 6-3, 200-pound righty is very high on USM’s pitching coach Mike Federico’s list, and thinks he will play a big role on the mound for Southern Miss in the future. “Alex is a guy that controls the zone and can throw three pitches for strikes at any time,” head coach Graves said.
In his senior year at Gulfport High School, the Gulfport, Mississippi native went (6-2) with an almost invincible, 0.36 ERA, striking out 63 and walking just 11 in 59.0 innings of work. Though his first six appearances of the season, Nelms (1-0, 3.72) has allowed four runs on seven hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts in 9.2 innings. Graves mentioned, “Alex will start for us and work some in relief as well throughout the summer.”
Joining Nelms, Clay Casey will be suiting up with the RedWolves in 2017 as well. Casey is a transfer junior playing his first season with the Delta State Statesmen. A Melbourne, Florida native, Casey was drafted in the 33rd round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft by the Washington Nationals.
Casey first attended Northwest Community College in Mississippi, before joining the Houston Cougars his sophomore season. While in Houston, Casey appeared in 41 games with 28 starts in 2016. Standing sturdy at 6-2, 220-pounds, the right-handed batter hit .226 with five home runs, which was tied for second-most on the team.
“Clay is a guy that can hit for power and really play the outfield,” Graves said. Since transferring to Delta State, Casey has started in all 33 games, holding a .336 / .411 / .609 slash line with 30 RBI, 34 runs, 11 doubles, and 8 home runs. Graves stated, “He will be an everyday outfielder for us and contribute in the middle of the lineup.”

Host families are a crucial, much-appreciated part of RedWolves baseball. Each summer, local families open their homes to our players and their generosity has helped us make the RedWolves a part of the Florence community for 18 years. Being a host family is a great opportunity for your family to connect with a college player while being part of the larger RedWolves family.
Host families provide room and board for a college player from the end of May through mid-August each year. All RedWolves players are student-athletes and are not paid to play in the Coastal Plain League. They come to Florence to further develop their skills and to catch the eyes of professional league scouts.
