The Wilson Tobs have qualified for the Pettit Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2014.
The Tobs will battle from the three seed through the week. Their first opponent is the two-seed Wilmington Sharks.
As the higher seed, the Sharks will host the one-and-done playoff game from Buck Hardee Field in the Port City at 7:00 p.m.
The Tobs are 3-7 this year against the Sharks. Wilson took the first two meetings between the two teams, but has only triumphed once in the last eight contests. The Tobs are 1-4 on the road vs. the Sharks.
The Tobs end the year as one of the top three offenses in the Coastal Plain League. The Tobs have the third most doubles (98) and the most triples (16) in the CPL.
Jimmy Latona led the team in batting average through the regular season (.342). Six Tobs are batting over .300 heading into the playoffs.
Andrew Webster is the team leader in double (15) and he also leads the team in home runs (6).
Wilson is expected to throw Zack Mozingo (East Carolina) vs. the Sharks. Mozingo has not started vs. Wilmington this season. In his last outing, Mozingo gave eight strong innings vs. Edenton in a 3-0 win.
Scouting on the Sharks points to a thin pitching staff. Mike Castellani (Bucknell) is the only true starter left. However, Ethan Wortkoetter (Presbyterian) is 2-0 vs. the Tobs in his starting appearances.
Wilmington’s offense has been powerful this season. Mark Donadio (Fordham) and Cletis Avery (Presbyterian) have proven themselves the most mobile on the base paths.
Alec Bohm (Wichita State) is arguably the best power slugger in the CPL and has record three homers vs. the Tobs so far this season. All of those dingers have come at Buck Hardee Field.
Wilmington will open as the favorite, but if the Tobs can force the Sharks’ starter in a short outing, Wilson could be able to lock things down. Closer Tanner Wilt (LaRoche) is a perfect 4/4 in his last four save attempts. Wilt has averaged two strikeouts per outing in that time frame.
The winner of Tobs vs. Sharks on Wednesday will get to play the winner of Morehead City and Peninsula on Friday night in the East Division Final.
