Following the game-tying solo home run by MHC outfielder Sammy Miller (Longwood) in the top of the second inning, the host Wilmington Sharks tallied eight unanswered runs in the bottom frames of the second and third inning en route to an 11-4 victory over the visiting Morehead City Marlins from Buck Hardee Field at Legion Stadium Wednesday evening. The Marlins compiled less than seven hits in the contest for the first time since June 6.
Morehead City falls to 0-2 (13-17 overall), while Wilmington improves to 3-1 (16-16 overall). The Marlins have an off-day tomorrow before traveling to Holly Springs to face the Salamanders from the North Main Athletic Complex Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with all the play-by-play action being called on the Marlins Mixlr Station. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:55 p.m.
Miller posted another huge night at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Chandler Corley (Armstrong State) went 2-for-5 in the contest. For Wilmington, Danny Wondrack (College of Charleston) led the Sharks offensive efforts with a 4-for-4 performance and pair of runs scored. Trevor McCutchin (Oral Roberts) finished 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs.
The Sharks jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single from McCutchin before Miller knotted the score at 1-1 on his first home run of the season in the top frame of the second inning.
Wilmington soon answered with five runs in the home half of the second inning to grab the 6-1 advantage, highlighted by a three-run homer from Ward Coleman (Davidson) to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead at the time. The Sharks tallied three more insurance runs in the bottom frame of the third inning to extend the advantage out to 9-1.
Morehead City trimmed the deficit down to six runs on an error by McCutchin in right field off the bat of Steven Taylor (Mercer), allowing two Marlins to score and make it a 9-3 contest in the top of the fourth inning. A two-run shot from Dan Wilson (UNC Asheville) stretched the Sharks lead out to 11-3 in the bottom half of the sixth. The Marlins made it 11-4 on a solo homer from Jackson Ware (Mercer) in the top of the ninth inning; however, Wilmington retired the side to secure the seven-run triumph.
Wilmington starting right-handed pitcher Logan Michaels (Oral Roberts0 got the win, improving to 1-1. Marlins starting lefty Quinton Driggers (Newberry) took the loss, falling to 2-2. The MHC righty pitching combination of Cody Boydstun (Longwood) and Charlie King (Davidson) tossed two combined innings of scoreless relief with no runs allowed on one hit and two strikeouts.
The Morehead City Marlins conclude the pre All-Star Game portion of their schedule this Saturday, July 8 when they host the CPL East first half champion Fayetteville SwampDogs from Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.
