The Coastal Plain League announced today that Justin Hawkins of Fayetteville was named Hitter of the Week, while Billy Layne of Gastonia earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the ninth week of CPL action (July 24 - July 30.)
Hawkins, a sophomore at Clemson, caught fire in week nine to finish with a .643 average across 14 at-bats. In total he notched nine hits with one double, two home-runs and four RBIs for 16 total bases and a 1.143 slugging percentage. The infielder also posted a .667 on-base percentage with one walk and five runs scored.
Meanwhile on the mound, Layne was dominant versus the Florence RedWolves on July 29 to earn the win. The Seton Hall sophomore tossed a nine inning complete-game, allowing only one earned run and four total hits while striking out seven for a .143 opponent’s batting average and 0.78 WHIP.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s premier summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 21st season in 2017, the CPL features 15 teams playing in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL has had over 1,400 alumni drafted and 107 of those – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut; while another notable alum – Russell Wilson – won Super Bowl XLVIII.
