Former Copperhead Trevor Richards Named MiLB Pitcher of the Year for Marlins

Updated October 26 2017

Trevor Richards, who played in Asheboro during the summer of 2014, has been named the minor league pitcher of the year in the Miami Marlins organization.

Richards had a very strong summer for the Copperheads, posting a 4-1 record in 7 starts, including 2 complete games. He sported an impressive 2.74 ERA in 42.2 innings pitched and struck out 45 batters on the year while only walking six.

The summer of 2014 was between the junior and senior seasons of an impressive collegiate baseball career at Drury for Richards.  The Aviston, Illinois native left Drury with the second most strikeouts (230), second most wins (24), and second lowest ERA (2.96) in school history. He was an all-conference pitcher 3 times and NCAA DII all-regional player once.

Richards graduated in 2015 and went undrafted that year, He played independent baseball in the Frontier League until signing with the Marlins in July of 2016. After impressing in his short time at two Class A stops the rest of that season, Trevor started the 2017 season in Class A Advanced Jupiter. In 27 appearances between there and later being promoted to AA Jacksonville, he combined to throw 146 innings in which he struck out 158 men while only walking 30. His combined ERA for the season was 2.53.

With numbers like those, Richards stands a good chance to be promoted again and possibly make it to AAA next season, one step away from the Majors.
