The Wilson Tobs clawed their way closer to a playoff spot with a 7-6 win over the Wilmington Sharks on Saturday from the Port City.
In front of a crowd of 600, Wilson rolled to an early lead after Logan Baldwin (Georgia Southern) scored on a Jimmy Latona (Mercyhurst) RBI-single.
Baldwin was the early storyline as he collected stolen bases number 23, 24, and 25 vs. the Sharks on Saturday. Baldwin has now tied the Tobs single-season record and is six away from tying the CPL single-season record.
After back-to-back doubles and runs scored from Andrew Webster (Barton) and Jack Larsen (UC-San Diego), the Tobs watched the Sharks blitz on offense.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Sharks smacked four hits and scored four runs to make it 4-3. Baldwin would tie the game in the next half-inning, scoring on a wild throw to third from the catcher.
The Tobs placed runners on first and second with one out in the top of the sixth when Austin Fisher (Santa Clara) sent his first homer of the year off the top of the wall and out.
Wilmington clawed back with a run scored in the bottom of the sixth and a run that crossed in the bottom of the ninth via an Alec Bohm (Wichita State) RBI. Bohm, who was the tying run, was thrown out on a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Tobs starter Zack Kelly (Newberry) earned the win (2-2) while CPL East All-Star Mike Castellani (Bucknell) took the loss (6-2). Tanner Wilt scored the save for his first this season.
After Morehead City lost to Petersburg, the Tobs sit a half-game back of the Marlins for fourth in the East. The Tobs play Peninsula tomorrow in Virginia, looking to get back to .500.
Wilson returns home on Tuesday for All-You-Can-Eat Tuesday and Chick-Fil-A Night.
