Edenton Gets Come from Behind Win at Peninsula

Updated June 30 2017

The Edenton Steamers (16-11) took down the Peninsula (15-11) 6-3 in a tightly contested contest at War Memorial Stadium.

The Pilots jumped out to a 3-0 early in the contest. Peninsula brought home three runs on four hits in the first inning. Mathew Schneider delivered the first blow of the inning with a two-RBI single to make it 2-0. Connor Davis brought home the final run of the inning when he brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 3-0.

The Steamers slowly but surely began to respond. Anthony Maselli cut into the deficit when he hit a solo home run opposite field to left to make it 3-1.

In the fifth, Edenton made it even closer when Connor Kopach took a hanging breaking ball over the left-field wall to make it 3-2.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Steamers delivered a big blow in the seventh. Billy Wilson hit a two-run shot to right center to give the Teal and Black the 4-3 advantage.

The long ball struck again in the eighth for the Clams when James Battley crushed a home run to right field to make it 5-3.

Meanwhile, Nick Spear worked two scoreless frames in the seventh and the eighth. Spear worked his way out of a jam in the eighth when he struck out Connor Davis with runners at second and third for the Pilots.

The Clams added insurance in the ninth when Maselli came home to score on an RBI single by Connor Kopach to make it 6-3.

Carmen Giampetruzzi came in to shut things down for Edenton in the ninth. Giampetruzzi worked a one-two-three inning to secure the win and his fifth save of the season.

Nick Wegmann (4-1) got the win for the Teal and Black. After a tough first inning, Wegmann then worked five more scoreless innings giving up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Vinnie Tarantola (2-2) picked up the loss for Peninsula.

The Steamers will be back in action on Saturday to wrap up the first half of the season against Holly Springs at Historic Hicks Field. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
