Cunningham and Miller named Coastal Plain League Players of the Week for Week Eight of Action

Updated July 25 2016

The Coastal Plain League announced today that Richard Cunningham of Edenton was named Hitter of the Week, while Chaz Miller of Forest City earned Pitcher of the Week for the eighth week of CPL action (July 18-July 24.)

Cunningham, a redshirt-freshman at Baylor University, continued his All-Star campaign with a .533 batting average over six games played for the Steamers. During that span he racked up 13 total hits with two doubles, one home run and three RBIs for 18 total bases and a .720 slugging percentage. The leadoff man did his job setting the table as well, boasting a .552 on-base percentage on his way to two stolen bases and seven runs scored.

On the mound, Miller showed why he is an All-Star closer, tossing three shut-out innings in three appearances, not allowing a hit and walking only one while striking out three for a .333 WHIP. The junior out of Bluefield College picked up three more saves to push his total to a league leading 10 on the year.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s premier summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 20th season in 2016, the CPL features 16 teams playing in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL has had nearly 1,300 alumni drafted and 88 of those – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut; while another notable alum – Russell Wilson – won Super Bowl XLVIII.
