ASHEBORO, N.C.

Coming from behind to win is getting to be routine for the Asheboro Copperheads.

For the third time in four games this week, the Copperheads fell behind early but fought their way back to claim victory - this time an 8-7 verdict over the visiting Forest City Owls. It was their sixth walk-off win of the season and their third extra-inning win without a loss.

Ryan Colombo was the hero against the Owls, lining a single up the middle to score Colin Rosenbaum from third with the game winner. The Copperheads. now a CPL-best 18-6 for the season, had trailed 4-0 and 7-5, only to rally both times and eventually force extra innings.

Lefty Matt Horkey, Asheboro’s third pitcher of the night, pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings to gain his third victory of the summer without a loss. Horkey allowed just three hits and fanned seven in his most impressive outing yet. Devin Sweet started and was gunning for his fifth win, but didn’t have his best stuff. Still, Sweet battled through six innings and left trailing 6-5.

Colombo led Asheboro’s 12-hit attack with three hits, while Derek Perry, Vito Friscia and Connor Lind had a pair of hits each.

Connor Grant belted a two-run homer in the first as the Owls took a quick 3-0 lead, then made it 4-0 with another run in the second.

But the Copperheads picked themselves up and climbed back into the game, eventually winning it in the 11th.

Asheboro will travel to Gastonia on Thursday night and then to Forest City on Friday night before winding up the first half schedule at home Saturday night against the Savannah Bananas. The Copperheads take a 1 1/2 game lead over High Point-Thomasville into the final three days of the first-half race. The first-half winner in both CPL divisions will secure a post-season playoff berth.
