Wilson took the hour drive to Holly Springs to wrangle the Salamanders on Wednesday and despite a valiant HS effort, the Tobs prevailed 8-4.
The first inning saw the Tobs score a pair in Logan Baldwin (Georgia Southern) and Jimmy Latona (Mercyhurst). Holly Springs would plate Brandon Riley (North Carolina) in the bottom of the inning.
The highlight of the night was a third inning towering home run from Jack Larsen (UC San Diego). Larsen’s drive stretched over the fence, over the concrete wall and onto North Main Street to give the Tobs a 4-1 lead.
A resilient Manders squad scored Matthew Schmidt (Texas) and Riley on a Danny Sheehan (San Diego State) two-RBI single in the fourth though.
Largely the game would be turned over the Tobs bullpen after that. Alex Yarem (Campbell) started, but a quartet of relievers finished the game off to give Yarem the win.
Wilson would add an pair of insurance markers in the eighth, the most notable of which was a double-steal that saw Baldwin steal home to score his 27th stolen base.
Tyler Howsley (UC-San Diego) would rope a two-RBI single into center to score two more in the ninth, giving the Tobs an 8-4 win.
Yarem improves to 4-2 on the year while Rodney Hutchinson (North Carolina) falters to 0-3. The Tobs are now 21-19 overall and over .500 in the second half (7-6). Holly Springs is now 16-21 overall.
The Tobs are back at home tomorrow to face Wilmington on Paint the Park Pink Night. Make sure to match the Tobs and wear your pink to support the fight against breast cancer.
