Tobs Sign Freeman Twins
WILSON, N.C. - The Wilson Tobs announced on Friday that they have signed twin brothers Cameron and Christopher Freeman to contracts for the upcoming 2008 season.
Both are currently in their freshman seasons at their respective colleges. Chris, an outfielder, is in his first season under head coach Willie Stewart at UNC-Asheville. Cameron, who can play both infield and outfield, is starting his collegiate career at East Carolina, led by Billy Godwin. The brothers, from Fayetteville, N.C., played at Cape Fear High School.
In 15 games with the Bulldogs this season, Chris is hitting .215 with 12 runs scored in just 37 at bats. He also has drawn eight walks, giving him a solid .370 on base percentage. Freeman is a perfect 2-2 in stolen base attempts for the 11-13 Bulldogs.
"Chris was actually recommended to me by UNC-Asheville assistant coach Bob Fenn," said Tobs' head coach Jeff Steele. "Bob has coached in Wilson before and spoke very highly of Chris and his potential on the diamond. He has a lot of tools and the experience this summer will certainly benefit his career."
Cameron, currently sidelined with a back injury, is yet to make his collegiate baseball debut with the 15-6 East Carolina Pirates. As a sophomore at Cape Fear, he led the conference with 23 runs scored and a .385 batting average. During his junior year, he received all-conference honors after posting a .380 average.
"He is able to play a lot of positions, both in the infield and the outfield," said Steele. "Cameron is a top or bottom of the order kind of hitter, and we are looking forward to having him in Wilson this summer."
His coach at East Carolina had similar thoughts on Cam's potential.
"Freeman is a tremendous athlete," said ECU head coach Billy Godwin. "He's a great runner, and has a very high ceiling. He grades out high across the board with his tools and abilities."
The Tobs' season begins on Wednesday, May 28, when they travel to Wilmington to take on the Sharks at 7:05 PM. Wilson will host its home opener on Friday, May 30 against the Florence RedWolves, with first pitch also scheduled for 7:05 PM.
