Grizzlies Fire Mascot
GASTONIA, N.C. - The Gastonia Grizzlies Baseball Club announced today the firing of six-year mascot Striker for numerous reasons including excessive hibernation and failure to have a presence in the community.
Striker, a 5-11, 300-pound Grizzly Bear mascot began his career in 2003 and instantly became a fan favorite. He was known for his dance moves and his enthusiasm for the Grizzlies. In recent years his performance has taken a hit. He even began taking naps during games.
Not only had Strikers performance declined but the Grizzlies also had to weigh financial consideration when it came to his contract. Strikers salary would have been too high of a figure against the mascot salary cap. When asked to comment on the decision Striker and his agent refused to respond.
"Striker lost the passion for the game and the fans that he once had," said General Manager Jesse Cole. "We will miss Striker but we know it is best for the team to have a mascot who is a part of the community. Our goal is to bring in a mascot who is hard working and loves to have fun. We promise to have our new mascot all around Gastonia in the years to come."
There have been unconfirmed rumors that the Grizzlies are talking with Yogi Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Smokey The Bear and at least two Care Bears to fill the void left by Striker.
The Grizzlies plan to have a new mascot by the end of March. The team will offer a unique opportunity for fans to win free tickets to a Grizzlies game. If anyone sees the new mascot out on the town and calls the Grizzlies front office they will receive one free ticket to a game this summer.
The Gastonia Grizzlies are a member of the Coastal Plain League, which features 14 teams across the Carolinas and Virginia. For more information on the CPL, please visit www.coastalplain.com. For information on the Grizzlies, please go to www.gastoniagrizzlies.com.
