Grizzlies Sign Shortstop From South Carolina
The Grizzlies announced the signing of South Carolina shortstop Scott Wingo for the 2008 season.
GASTONIA, N.C. - The Gastonia Grizzlies Baseball Club announced today the signing of Scott Wingo, a 5-10 shortstop/second basemen from the University of South Carolina.

As a freshman Wingo is making an immediate impact at South Carolina. Through 10 games Wingo is leading the team in walks and on base percentage at an impressive .639 clip. He is also third on team in runs scored with 11.

When asked about having Scott Wingo start as a true freshman, South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner said, "Scott Wingo is not your typical freshman. He has energy, he has confidence, and he doesn't have the freshman jitters that a lot of young people go through."

In high school Wingo starred at Mauldin high school in Greenville, South Carolina where he was named to the All-State team as a senior. Wingo also played on the North Carolina/South Carolina select team.

"We are very excited about bringing a top player from a program like South Carolina to Gastonia this summer," said Gastonia General Manager Jesse Cole. "I think our fans will really enjoy watching Scott play this season. He is an outstanding defensive shortstop and should also be a spark plug for our offense."

Opening night tickets will go on sale Friday March 14th at noon and can be secured by calling the Gastonia Grizzlies front office at (704) 866-8622. Select GrizzliesÂ’ box seat season tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the office or visiting www.gastoniagrizzlies.com.

The Grizzlies are a member of the Coastal Plain League, which features 14 teams across the Carolinas and Virginia. For more information on the CPL, please visit www.coastalplain.com.
