Blowfish, City of Columbia Awarded 2008 CPL Petitt Cup Tournament
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Coastal Plain League and Columbia Blowfish announced that Columbia will host the 2008 Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup Championship Tournament. The three-day tournament will run from August 7-9 at Capital City Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
"We are very happy to announce that Columbia will be the host city for our 2008 Petitt Cup Tournament," said League President and Commissioner Pete Bock. "The Blowfish did a great job with the CPL All-Star Game last year and proved how well they could host one of our events. Bill (Shanahan), Michael (Savit), Skip (Anderson) and their staff has all done a wonderful job in Columbia, and we feel they will continue to do so again this year and make hosting the tournament a great success."
Of the League's 14 teams, the Petitt Cup Championship Tournament will feature the top eight teams (three first half champions, three second half champions, and two at-large teams) at the end of the regular season. Seeding for the tournament will be based on overall winning percentage for the entire season. Of the eight teams that make the tournament, the team with the best overall winning percentage at the end of the regular season will be the No. 1 seed, the team with the second-best overall winning percentage will be the No. 2 seed, and so forth.
If the second half champion of a particular division is the same team as the first half champion for that division, then the playoff berth will be awarded to the team with the next-best overall winning percentage for the entire season (despite division). The two at-large entries will be determined by the two highest overall winning percentages of teams not yet securing a playoff spot. Should the host club not clinch a playoff spot, then as the host team they will be entered into the tournament as one of the at-large teams.
